From pavement to dirt

Same idea, different tread. The deeper the gaps and bigger the blocks, the more it grips off-road and the louder it is on the street. Tap one to jump to it. Snow tires are their own thing: see Winter.

P vs LT

P (passenger) tires ride softer. LT (light truck) tires have stronger construction for heavy loads and towing. Trucks that tow or haul usually want LT.

Load range (C, D, E) and XL

How much weight a tire can carry at full pressure. LT tires use C, D or E (E is the strongest); passenger tires can be SL (standard) or XL (extra load).

M+S and 3PMSF

M+S (mud and snow) is printed on most all-season and A/T tires. The mountain-with-snowflake symbol (3PMSF) means the tire passed a real snow traction test.

UTQG (e.g. 600 A A)

Treadwear, traction and temperature grades. A higher treadwear number usually lasts longer; "A" is the best traction and heat rating.

Common questions

What is the difference between A/T and R/T tires?

R/T (rugged-terrain) tires sit between all-terrain and mud-terrain. They have bigger shoulder blocks and a more aggressive look than an A/T, but a tighter center tread so they are quieter on the road than a mud tire.

Are all-terrain tires loud?

A little louder than highway tires, but most modern A/T tires are quiet enough for daily driving. Mud-terrain tires are the loud ones.

Do I need LT tires on my truck?

If you tow, haul heavy loads or your truck came with LT tires from the factory, yes. Half-ton trucks that mostly commute often do fine on P-metric or XL tires. Check the placard in your door jamb or text us your truck.

Can I mix tire types?

It is best to run the same type on all four tires, and on all-wheel-drive vehicles it matters even more. Mixing types changes how the car grips and handles.
